Asul Uttar

This game was played between Ian & I in sunny Bognor on 25th March 2012. Ian took the Pakistanis and I commanded the Indians. We used the CD Modern rules to play. All the kit on the table came from my collection

The Battlefield from the air, taken from the Pakistani end. The Indians can be seen in their defensive positions. Asul Uttar is on the right of the picture.

The 9th J&K Rifles in Asul Uttar supported by A squadron 9th Horse

4th Grenadiers supported by C Squadron 9th Horse (H&R Fireflys representing the Indian Shermans). The wire represents the front edge of the AT minefield. Infantry is Adler WW2 Brits

B&C Companies 3rd Cavalry in position in the cornfields behind the Grenadiers

The Pakistanis are coming! A company each of the 24th Cavalry and 1st Frontier Force rather impetuously charge down route 21 in to the teeth of the Indian defences (H&R M113, & Skytrex M47)

The rest of 24th Cav and 1st FF move to attack the southern Indian flank. We were using WW2 Soviets for the Pakistani infantry. More properly we should have used more WW2 Brits (Indian and Pakistani uniforms were similar) but I was concerned about the inf getting mixed up & confused in the game

The 4th Cavalry and the 10th Frontier Force flow past the 4th Grenadier's minefield and head south. H&R M48 & M113

The 24th Can and 1st FF are punished for their rashness. The Sherman might not be a great tank by 1965 but its still lethal when firing at the flank from short range.

Tanks continue towards Asul Uttar

B Squadron 9th Horse moves up to route 21.

4th Cavalry and 1st FF continue to move south to Route 21. Their flank is guarded by the Chaffees (H&R) of 12th Cavalry

The lead elements of  4th Cav and 1st FF meet B Squadron 9th Horse just outside Cheema Kurd

The lead elements of 24th Cav and 1st FF drive past Asul Uttar. Are they heading for Cheema Kurd or the crossroads beyond? The Shermans of 9th Horse have failed their morale and gone shaken so the Pakistani commander felt this manoeuvre was relatively safe.

24th Cav and 1st FF push past Cheema Kurd to the south heading towards the undefended crossroads. Notice the missing Jeep + 106mm which fell foul of the Shermans at Asul Uttar

3rd Cavalry counter attack the flank of the Pakistani 4th Cavalry

Just as B Company 9th Horse fail their morale C Company arrive to save the day. However the Pakistani assault on Cheema Kurd is well under way by this point

The AMX-13s of 8th Cavalry move north the stop the Pakistani break-through to the crossroads. Skytrex AMX-13's. The missile launching version was a packing error and is standing in for a standard gun armed tank

3rd Cavalry's counter attack falters. However they have come of better in the fire fight with the Pakistani M48s

Asul Uttar under intense Pakistani pressure. Most of the Shermans are burning and the last survivor is shaken.

In the east Pakistani forces reach the houses by the crossroads

C Company 9th Horse and 8th Cavalry converge on the Pakistani break through

Asul Uttar falls to the Pakistanis

The 4th Grenadiers start to move south for a counterattack on Assul Uttar

And that's where we had to leave it - on a knife edge. The Pakistanis had the objective ther needed - Asul Uttar - bar some tidying up. The Indians were four kills away from achieving their victory conditions which trumps that of the Pakistanis. However they only had three turns in which to complete their mission. Its a shame we ran out of time.
